A payline is a defined route across reels on which matching symbols may pay according to the game rules. Some games offer fixed lines; others let the player choose how many are active. The stake can depend on the number of lines and the amount per line.
Ways-to-win games commonly count matching symbols across adjacent reels from a defined side, rather than requiring one exact line pattern. Variable-reel formats can change the number of possible ways on each spin. The paytable explains which symbols and directions qualify.
Before a spin, inspect the total stake rather than assuming a displayed line value is the full cost. Wilds, scatters and special symbols may follow separate rules. A larger number of ways is a game mechanic, not evidence that a win is likely.
